Baby's lungs are mature enough that, if born right now, she has a pretty good chance of surviving (with help from medical technology). Her skin is still pretty wrinkly (one byproduct of living in amniotic fluid) but will smoothen as fat continues to deposit.
Your baby's eyelids, which have been fused shut, begin to open... along with a new set of eyelashes! He or she already appears a lot like he or she will look at birth, although the skin is quite wrinkled due to constant immersion in amniotic fluid. You've probably been feeling a lot of movement these last few weeks, even a few hiccups here and there! This is essentially a fetal reflex, but it sure feels weird, doesn't it?
How far along? 28 weeksHow big is baby? New size comparisons next week, but the update for this week is that she's about the size of a Chinese cabbage, about 15 inches long and 2 1/2 pounds.
Sleep: More please. I love the weekends. It was actually a fairly good sleep week, but that's relatively speaking. I still wake up throughout the night and I'm definitely not as deep of a sleeper as I've been in the past. I've gotten into the habit of staying up later than I probably should lately so that probably needs to change.
Best moment this week: 3-D ultrasound and we bought some "firsts" this week, including diapers. I don't know why that seemed more surreal than some of the other things we've bought. (Oh and Budaj decided to celebrate by ripping open the package of diapers...along with the special safety Q-tips...and spreading them across the bonus room. About a dozen (out of 36) are still usable.)
Movement: Still varies with quiet and active days, but she loves nighttime. I feel her a LOT more when I'm supposed to be sleeping.
Food cravings: Cheeseburgers/turkey burgers were a popular choice this week. I'd LOVE more of the fries from Fuddruckers with cheese sauce. Yum.
What I miss: Hmm. Feeling pretty good this week. I could do without swelling and I'd love some quality sleep, but don't feel much like complaining...and I found a pair of jeans that don't fall down so I'm in good shape. Figuratively speaking.
What I am looking forward to: Having the glucose tolerance test behind me. Hopefully I pass. Perhaps I should try to get in some more cheese fries from Fuddruckers before the test just in case?
Milestones: Like I said, lots of "firsts" purchased. 28 weeks also is a big milestone in that survival rate (if born early) jumps up to over 90% and chance of being born with a serious medical condition drops big time. Good job, little one! Oh yeah, and I'm in the 3rd trimester now! How'd that happen so fast?
Weekly Wisdom: I'm lacking wisdom this week. Relax? Always good advice I suppose. We got some essential baby stuff to stock the nursery--lotion, shampoo, diaper rash cream, baby bath stuff, etc--and that made me feel a little more prepared too.
whenever you get the chance to rest, do it!
