As baby's skin smoothes out, her brain just keeps getting more wrinkled. All those grooves and indentations increase surface area, meaning more room for that oh-so-essential brain tissue. She's also adding some brawn -- her grip is now strong enough to grasp a finger.
Visually, your baby may track moving objects. When he or she blinks, the eye's iris responds to light and dark. Many Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes, but often their eye color changes within the first year of life. Newborns have a limited range of vision, so you'll want to get up close to your little one after birth so he or she can take a good look at you.
How far along? 30 weeks (I have to say, when I got my update email, my jaw fell open)
How big is baby? About the weight of a head of cabbage. At first I thought they'd used this before, but I guess a previous comparison had been a Chinese cabbage. Yeah, I'm a simple girl and not a huge fan of cabbage, but actual size-wise, she's about 15 3/4 inches, head to heel and 3+ pounds.
Sleep: I'm my own worst enemy because I seem to be getting back to my night owl routine a lot more, which means obviously less sleep. I did, however, take 2 lunch naps last week and I sleep in on the weekends. 10am-ish, which isn't typical for me. I usually like to get up by 9 or feel like I'm wasting the day. Now I know I need my sleep and the quality of sleep I get is questionable. I flip-flop from side to side during the night, get up to use the bathroom 1-2+ times a night, get heartburn a few nights a week, and snore like a locomotive (blame it on swollen nasal passages), to be perfectly honest.
Best moment this week: We had fun at Ryan & Riss's Christmas party...also, because we're hockey fans, the first 10 minutes of the Avs/Blue Jackets game was awesome. (4 goals for us!) I'm also planning to order the crib, mattress, and probably the fan for her room tonight, which I'm pretty excited about! Oh and if they weren't protective enough, the 3 dogs have decided they are my entourage of bodyguards--Budaj especially. The only reason he's not at my side is if I've shut the bathroom door before he can squeeze in.
Movement: Yep, though most of the time I have no idea what position she's in. She seems to sit low in my belly. Or so the pressure in my lower abdomen and my stretchmarks tell me so. She was bouncing all over the place after I had to drink the glucola this morning, poor baby. I think she liked it about as much as I did.
Food cravings: I still want my Fuddruckers cheese fries :) Oh and cheeseburgers and sandwiches. So basically, meat and cheese. The meat part sounds about right since in addition to telling me I needed to do the 3-hour glucose test, the nurse told me I'm a little anemic (totally common during pregnancy). I guess cravings really are our bodies telling us what we need...but in a much more appetizing form ;)
What I miss: Still my wedding ring. Also my heartburn-free days.
What I am looking forward to: Christmas! Ordering the crib and getting it delivered and set up. Also, our new used bedroom dresser that's being professionally sanded and stained as a baby present for us. I'm so excited to see it finished. Then we can move Kaelyn's other dresser into her nursery :) Lots going on!
Milestones: Does the 3-hour glucose test count? That'll feel more like a milestone when I pass! 30 weeks feels like a pretty big milestone too...and we did our breathing and relaxation class (AKA: lamaze) last Saturday, which I think gave us some good info. Oh, and another stretch mark showed up, but is thusfar, unnamed. For the record, the left foot is Shrek, right is Donkey, small first stretchie is Bitsy, and the biggest, most pronounced stretchie is Taloola. I name them for my own amusement. I actually don't mind them--this is the first time ever I'm not self conscious about my stomach so that's a great feeling and not even stretch marks can ruin that for me. So far.
